The Time is Now to Transform our Public Schools

Update on the PTA-supported Our Children, Our Future statewide education initiative

The most urgent crisis facing California schools is that they simply don’t have the resources to provide our children with the education they need.  That is why the California State PTA supports the Our Children, Our Future initiative, which will transform our public schools by generating a substantial amount of new revenues for K-12 schools and early childhood education.  Other initiatives have also been proposed for the November 2012 statewide ballot, but we believe Our Children, Our Future is clearly the best for students and public education.

We are moving full-steam ahead and helping to qualify and pass this initiative in November 2012.

All PTA members and leaders are encouraged to join the effort to qualify and pass the Our Children, Our Future initiative.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Patty Scripter, Director of Legislation for California State PTA at legislation@capta.org, if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks for all that you do on behalf of all children and families!

Agenda items for the upcoming meeting include the Working Parents Forum and funding approval for the Apple iPads for our teachers.

Working Parents Forum:  The challenges and options for Courreges families vary, but one thing we all agree on, is that we want the best for our kids, and the more we come together and understand each other as parents, the better.  Please attend a working parents forum led by Staci Fujita at our next Association Meeting.

Jog-a-thon Needs Prize Donations! – Updated

Although the Jog-a-thon funds most of our amazing programs at Courreges, there is no budget available to purchase prizes for our dedicated students that raised $150 or more.  Please look through your child’s holiday gifts for duplicates or for those items your child will never use, and place them in the DOUG’s box outside the school office.  DOUG’s are “Duplicate or Unwanted Gifts” and they make fantastic prizes.  Also, keep us in mind as you check out those after Christmas sales.  Remember, our target age is 6-11 years old, since the goal is to motivate our Courreges students! If you have any questions, please contact Monica Maytorena at 714-596-1302. Click for flyer:    DOUG Request

Calling all Science Whizzes, Scientists, Those with Contacts at Science Companies and Anyone Interested in Helping with Courreges Science Day this Spring…

Please let us know how you can help make our Science Day a success.  We need your ideas for science experiments, demonstrations or science topics of interest that can be presented to elementary-aged kids in about 10-30 minute intervals. If you have a science experiment, idea for a science talk, contacts for a science demo or talk, or are willing to do a science experiment  or presentation for our kids, please contact Jennifer Edmonds at jfedmonds@verizon.net.  We’ll also happily accept donations, kits, science gear and more.  Our Courreges elementary kids will rotate through several experiments on Science Day to learn more about all types of science: biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, zoology, and more. The more help and contact we get, the more exciting the day will be for our kids.  So dig back into your college and high school books, or even your current or former workplace and figure out what you can do to help our Courreges Science day.  Some ideas so far: rocket launch demo; magical egg trick; chemistry demo of color changing liquids, and the physics of hula-hooping.  Please send us your ideas and any help you can give.
