High 5’s All Around!
Courreges families you deserve to
stand up and take a bow. The PTA made an appeal regarding the importance of
supporting our Jog-A-Thon and maintaining educational excellence and you more
than answered the call. As of Friday, April 2, pledge deadline, you have
generously and amazingly raised
$68,753
($61,976 in cash,
another $6,777 in matching gifts)
Simply put, thank you very much!
That being said, you are not quite
off the hook. We now need your voice and we need to hear your input.
On Thursday, April 22 at 8:15 AM there is a PTA meeting. At this meeting the PTA
will begin budget discussions for next year. All PTA programs and budget line
items will be reviewed in the coming months.
Please attend this meeting; let us know how you would like to see these hard
earned funds put to use next year, add your support to programs you would like
to see continued and help the PTA make judicious cuts and tough choices if need
be. You raised this money, now please help the PTA determine how best to use
these funds to benefit all our children.
THE PTA NEEDS YOUR VOICE, YOUR IDEAS AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT!

Money to the classrooms, supplies for our kids, how does the PTA make that
happen? Two words:
Jog-A-Thon and Scrip
For years Courreges has been able to give each of our teachers $10 per
student for materials and supplies. These monies come from discretionary
funds allocated to our school from the district. With the budget cuts last
year, these funds were in serious jeopardy for the 2003/2004 school year.
Thanks to the success of Jog-A-Thon and scrip last year, the PTA was
in a position to provide additional financial support to Courreges. School
funds were then freed up and as a result your child’s teacher received their
funding for supplies and materials this year.
With more budget cuts coming our way, the ability of our school to provide
these monies next year is once again in question. For well over a decade,
scrip profits have directly assisted our teachers in this area. For every
dollar of scrip profit that hit the PTA’s general fund another dollar found
its way to a teacher. But as of the publication of this flier, no one has
committed to run the scrip program for next year.
In short, the pool of available funds
for materials and supplies for our teachers next year is dependent on the
success of our Jog-A-Thon.
Our PTA has long been in the enviable position of supporting programs that
enhance and enrich our curriculum. Though recently the PTA has found itself
faced with the necessity of helping to maintain educational basics, we will
continue to work to fund those extra programs that make a difference.
THE PTA IS INDEBTED TO ALL OUR FAMILIES WHO HAVE PLEDGED GENEROUSLY TO
JOGATHON X-TREME 2004
AND TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE
GIVEN GENEROUSLY OF THEIR TIME AS WELL.
This is the last of a series of three articles meant to inform Courreges
families about the PTA and its fundraising efforts: how the money is raised
and how it is spent. We encourage you to come to PTA meetings, educate
yourself about how we operate, and join us in efforts to improve the
educational environment for your children.

X-PECTED TO
X-EXCEED
X-PECTATIONS!
$ XX,000???
We have a great chance to x-ceed our pledge
goal but…
that will only happen if ALL the pledge monies are turned in. Please help your
child collect their pledges from all your friends, neighbors, relatives and
co-workers.
April 1st is the deadline! We’ve only two weeks!
The Jog-A-Thon Committee is x-tremely pleased to recognize
the x-ceptional efforts of our x-hausted runners:
-
Our x-cited Kindergarteners ran over 2000 laps (over 230 miles)
-
The x-hilerating 1st graders ran over 3,000 laps (over 350 miles)
-
The x-alted 2nd graders ran over 4,100 laps (over 450 miles)
-
Our x-plovise 3rd graders ran over 1,420 laps (over 355 miles)
-
The x-ceptional 4th graders ran over 1,450 laps (over 370 miles)
-
Our x-perienced 5th graders ran over 1,800 laps (over 450 miles)
We would like to x-press our thanks to all the families who
helped make phone calls, donated cups and prizes, set up the tracks, poured
thousands of cups of water, marked laps, tallied pledges and cheered our
children on.
A special thank-you to the unsung hero of almost every event
the PTA sponsors, Bulmaro Sanchez, our one-in-a-million head custodian.

How
have we been able to mitigate the budget cuts at Courreges?
The budget cuts from the district were severe last year, but the PTA had the
funds to help lessen the impact on our teachers, school staff and children.
Below is a partial accounting of where we were able to step in and be of
assistance for the 2003/2004 school year:
|
Paper for Xerox/Risograph: |
$ 3,500 |
|
Library Books: |
$ 2,000 |
|
Instructional Aid: |
$ 7,000 |
|
Fax Machine: |
$ 200 |
|
Xerox/Risograph Maint. Contracts:* |
$ 5,000 |
|
Permanent Playground Equipment: |
$ 10,000 |
|
(*PTA purchased machines, contracts formerly covered by district) |
$ 27,700 |
With the passage of Propositions 57 and 58, the budget scenario may not be as
bleak but there are still more cuts on the horizon for next year.
As of the publication of this flier, no one has stepped
forward to run the scrip program for next year.
Therefore, the
funds raised from this Jogathon may be the ONLY
significant revenue we have to run ALL
our programs next year.
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR JOGATHON! |

How
crucial are Jog-A-Thon funds to Courreges?
You may be surprised to find out which educational opportunities your
children enjoy that are made possible only through the fundraising efforts of
the PTA. Below is a portion of the educational programs funded
completely through your donations. The figures are from the PTA’s budget for the
2003/2004 school year:
|
Assemblies: |
|
$ 1,500 |
|
Best Paw Forward: |
|
$ 1,200 |
|
Computer Aid: |
|
$ 17,500 |
|
Computer Lab Supplies: |
$ 2,100 |
|
Field Trips: |
|
$ 6,000 |
|
Art Masters: |
|
$ 4,000 |
|
Weekly Readers: |
|
$ 2,500 |
|
|
Total: |
$ 34,800 |
The only reason these programs continue to exist at our school is because
once a year our families step up and generously support our Jog-A-Thon.
Your children received their
pledge cards last week. They are due Tuesday, March 16 but feel free to keep
gathering pledges and add them to your card when it’s returned to you after the
Jog-A-Thon.
Not long ago, $40,000 seemed
impossible to attain.
Let’s do
the impossible again: $50,000! |

What do we do at Courreges that has our children
consistently outperforming students from most other Orange County schools on
standardize tests? Well…here a few X-amples:
-
an X-cellent Art Masters series
-
an
X-emplary state of the art computer lab and instructor
-
X-tra funds for the
library and classroom enhancement
-
field trip X-periences
-
X-tremely
popular Best Paw reading program
The price tag on these items alone is in
X-cess
of $38,000!
For new Courreges families, you may have noticed (with
relief) that your children have not been asked to go door to door selling
chocolates, wrapping paper or magazines to raise these crucial funds.
Our once a year
Jogathon raises over 75% of our PTA funds and makes X-cellence a reality at
Courreges.
For the past four years, the Jogathon has flirted with
breaking
the
$50,000 mark.
With your help we will do it this year! As always, it is the prizes and the prospect of making
it to the prize selection day that motivate our students to gather pledges.

HERE’S HOW YOU
CAN HELP:
1.
Please consider donating a prize. Large or small, anything is
appreciated. The first 25 families to donate a prize will receive a Cougar
water bottle. Drop the item off in the office with your name on it and we’ll
deliver the bottle to your child’s class.
2.
Assist our chairperson, Kellie Hopkins, by following up prize
solicitation letters that have been sent to local businesses.
This is critical
to the success of the Jogathon.
Contact Kellie at
848-2131 or

3.
